About SquareCaster
SquareCaster is a chess-training site for beginners and improving players. Its browser games practise square names, piece movement, captures and writing moves in chess notation, alongside untimed chess against the computer.
Also called SquareCaster Chess, the site runs at squarecaster.com on phones, tablets and computers. The games need JavaScript; this page and the chess guides can be read without it.
What can I practise?
- Garden Raid — Practise chess coordinates in Garden Raid. Spot a mole, name its square and bonk before it escapes. Free 45-second browser rounds, no account needed.
- Clockwork Lockdown — Practise chess coordinates in Clockwork Lockdown. Find wind-up automatons and call their squares. Start with free, no-clock Learn, then try timed defence.
- Relic Runner — Practise chess-piece movement in Relic Runner. Plan routes and gather relics without a timer. Explore and the first three puzzle chambers are free.
- Dropstrike — Practise chess moves and captures in Dropstrike. Start with free, no-clock Learn: enemies wait for your move. Play in your browser, no account needed.
- Chess Practice — Play a full, untimed chess game against the computer in Chess Practice. Write each move in chess notation, as White or Black. Free, no account needed.
- Spell Duels — Practise writing chess notation in Spell Duels: write each shown move to guide heroes through monster arenas, without a timer. The first seven arenas are free.
Square Sprint is a separate, optional 60-second test of finding named squares, with a Daily Sprint.
These games exercise coordinates, piece movement and notation. They do not replace learning chess strategy, and their scores are not chess ratings.
What is free?
Free play needs no account. Garden Raid, Chess Practice, Square Sprint, the Daily Sprint and Spell Duels’ first seven arenas stay free, as do Learn and Sector 1 in Clockwork Lockdown, Explore and chambers 1–3 in Relic Runner, and Learn and wave 1 in Dropstrike. An optional US$9.99 one-time Arcade Pass unlocks more levels and modes. No subscription.
